Handy Information About Petlog
What is Petlog?
Petlog is one of the UK's largest microchip databases for pets, with more than 14 million pets registered. It was founded in 1996 and is managed by The Royal Kennel Club, a not-for-profit organisation. When your dog or cat is microchipped, the chip number and your contact details are stored on the Petlog database. If your pet is ever found and scanned by a vet, dog warden or rescue centre, Petlog can match the chip to you and help reunite you. Petlog also offers Petlog Secure, which makes it easy to keep your details up to date when you move house or change your number, and Petlog Reunite, which provides active support with alerts and notifications if your pet goes missing.
Why pair a Petlog tag with your pet's microchip?
A microchip is permanent, but it's invisible. It only helps once your pet reaches someone with a scanner. A Petlog engraved tag works instantly: a neighbour, dog walker or passer-by can read it and call you straight away, often before your pet ever reaches a vet or warden. Using a microchip and a Petlog dog tag together gives your pet the best chance of a fast, safe return home. Our official Petlog tags carry the recognisable Petlog design, so anyone who finds your pet can see at a glance that they're microchipped and registered.
Petlog tags and UK law
In the UK, all dogs must be microchipped and registered on a compliant database such as Petlog. Cats in England must also be microchipped by 20 weeks old. Separately, under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the owner's name and address on a tag or plate. A microchip alone does not meet this requirement. A Petlog dog tag engraved with your name and address keeps you compliant. Read more in our guide to UK dog tag legal requirements.
What to engrave on your Petlog tag
- Your surname (or full name)
- Your house number or name and postcode — required by law for dog
- Your mobile number, plus a second number if space allows
- "Microchipped" if your tag design doesn't already show it, which can also deter theft
Many owners leave the pet's name off the tag for security reasons. See our engraving guide for more tips.
