Why You Shouldn’t Risk Losing Your Pet

In 2023–24, UK local authorities handled an estimated 36,965 stray/unwanted dogs, and only about 39% of dogs with known outcomes were reunited with their original owners. Dogs Trust specifically collects information about factors affecting reunification, including whether microchip information is up to date and whether the dog is wearing a collar and tag containing the owner's contact details.

Cats Protection's July 2025 research estimated that there are around 900,000 free-roaming, unowned cats in the UK, and that more than 150,000 cats needing homes enter shelters each year, only reuniting around 1,900 cats with their owners each year through its own network.

Keeping your pet's microchip, ID tag and contact details up to date can help give them the best chance of being quickly reunited with you if they go missing.

The first step to avoiding losing your dog for any length of time is to have them microchipped.  The next important step is to make sure your pet wears an ID tag.  This way, if lost, you can quickly be reunited.  Both microchipping and identification are legal requirements for dogs, and cats must also be microchipped.
